Comparison, From Friend To Enemy

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.

James 1:24 (The Message)

My best friend, my ever-present companion
The wonder of your truth, so loud and forceful
“Here is where you fit”, I hear, “below these but above those”
A fact so well known, so well publicized, never changing, endearing

When did we first meet?
When did this enduring partnership begin?
Out of the womb I saw you, in the distance
The shame of youth brought you closer, made us familiar
Your diatribe, the adopted ruler by which I measured myself

Not only me but others you have befriended
We are a community, always unsure, always uncertain
Connected through despair, doubt, insecurity and upturned priorities
Your grip is tight, like that of a jealous lover
The darkness your ally

The Light shines showing the created to be unique
Each path different, all potential destinations purposeful
Lives intersect like routes on a crowded map
A multitude of directions, all distinct and meaningful, ne’er repeated

My discovery is so sweet
Light beckons, I answer
The jealous fingers loosen, my enemy relents
"Liar!” is my shout of victory
The refrain of freedom echoes
In my liberated sanctuary, the Truth is enthroned

I am not an object to be ranked, categorized
And set within the false hierarchy of this world
I am the only one of my type, there are no others!
My eternal and upward goal to become like the One who created.
