The new year is all about renewal and change. What resolutions have you made this year. Lose weight? Get trimmer? Add muscle to your frame?. Get stronger? Whatever it is, you can be assured that it won't be easy to accomplish. Anything that is worth the effort is never easy.
I have learned over the years that the reasons why we pursue fitness and nutrition goals change with time. Sixteen years ago, I decided to join a gym because I needed to lose weight and my eating habits were not healthy. I was able to lose a significant amount of weight during that first year.....and then the reason to continue changed. I realized that there was value and affirmation in being seen as physically attractive and desirable....not a healthy reason, but a reason nonetheless.
I have faced my body image issues and realized that I am prone to attaching worth to how I look. That's a flaw that I will have to deal with constantly. I have also learned, however, that there are larger life lessons to be learnt when we embark on a journey of health, wellness and fitness; values worth pursuing that make fitness and nutrition more than being about appearance. I call these the seven rules working (life) out. Over the next few weeks, I will unpack each of these and tie them to God's perfect plan for us all. Here they are:
1. Do your workout, no more, no less
2. The more difficult, the more gain
3. Form more than weight
4. Do the opposite
5. Make a better bad decision
6. Cheat meal, not cheat day AND enjoy it
7. Make your rest count
